The management team at Alpine Classic Co have made the difficult decision to cancel the Alpine Classic due to various challenges.
The event has a rich history, starting in 1986 with a small group of Audax riders embarking on the 200km ‘Classic’ route. The event holds a special place in the hearts of many riders, volunteers, and suppliers, and we want to thank everyone who has played a role in the history of the Alpine Classic.
Unfortunately, several factors have led to the cancellation of the event. Fires and other emergencies have previously disrupted the event, but it’s never happened four years in a row before.
- In 2020, the event was cancelled due to bushfires in the high country.
- In 2021, the closure of the Victorian border prevented many interstate riders from attending the event.
- In 2022, extreme heat forced the cancellation of longer rides, and the ongoing Omicron wave of COVID-19 significantly impacted participation
- In 2023, a landslide on the road to Falls Creek required route changes, resulting in significantly decreased participation
Furthermore, in the post-pandemic world, rising inflation has increased costs, and the general tourism boom in Bright has made it increasingly difficult for riders to find accommodation during the event weekend. Additionally, the need to move away from the traditional Start/Finish location in Howitt Park for 2024 presents yet another challenge.
Considering the cumulative impact of these factors over the past four years, and with registrations no longer covering event expenses, the management team sadly concludes that running the 2024 Alpine Classic is not feasible, with no future date set for the event.
Once again we want to extend our warmest thanks to all who have been involved with, or ridden the event since 1986.
Those that were registered for the January 2024 event will be offered full refunds and have been sent a separate communication. Should any not be able to locate this email please contact email@example.com.
